Charlie is a Tec-NQ House boarding student constructing a career in carpentry. He has been completing work experience at home in the Torres Strait with his Uncle at Paul Ware Construction. Tec-NQ House is located in Rosslea, Townsville accommodating up to 40 boys who are completing year 10, 11 or 12 at Tec-NQ. With a deliberately different approach to senior high school, Tec-NQ House students are supported to find vocational pathways that meet their individual career goals, in addition to completing their Senior School Certificate.
Through volunteer work experience programs across north and west Queensland, students get to test out different industries to see what suits them best. Many students go onto secure school-based apprenticeships where they are paid to learn, before transitioning to full time apprenticeships once they graduate from year 12.
“I do work experience with a construction company at home as part of my Tec-NQ placement,” said Charlie. “It’s going really well”, he added
Charlie has been progressing through his vocational pathway, by completing work experience in a trade area he expressed an interest in. “I live on Hammond Island in the Torres Strait, so it’s good to be able to have work experience near home too,” he mentioned. “When I’m working I live and work on Moa, and I go home to Hammond on the weekends,” said Charlie.
When Charlie travels home in term-break he loves to spend time with his father and friends camping, hunting and fishing.
“In our free time at Tec-NQ House I like to play basketball with the boys on our half court,” he commented.
