Solomon’s Electrical Trade Start

Tec-NQ House student Solomon started a school-based electrical apprenticeship in June 2024. Tec-NQ House is located in Rosslea, Townsville accommodating up to 40 boys who are completing year 10, 11 or 12 at Tec-NQ. With a deliberately different approach to senior high school, Tec-NQ House students are supported to find vocational pathways that meet their individual career goals, in addition to completing their Senior School Certificate.

Through volunteer work experience programs across north and west Queensland, students get to test out different industries to see what suits them best. Many students go onto secure school-based apprenticeships where they are paid to learn, before transitioning to full time apprenticeships once they graduate from year 12. Tec-NQ House student Solomon’s hard work and great attitude have paid off with him securing an electrical apprenticeship earlier this year.

“Work is good, I’m learning lots,” said Solomon. “When I finish high school, I plan to go full time at work to complete my trade,” he commented.

Platinum Electricians Townsville is the employer who has offered Solomon the apprenticeship. Like all Tec-NQ students who have secured a school-based apprenticeship, Solomon balances his school and employment commitments with clear and open communication between the school and the workplace. By adopting a flexible approach to all that is on Solomon’s plate, he will finish high school with a Queensland Certificate of Education and be part-way through his apprenticeship (in addition to earning money!)

Once he completes school at Tec-NQ, he will return to the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) division of Tec-NQ to complete his off-the-job training component of the apprenticeship.
